Project Objective

Disruptive Technologies sought to create an engaging and interactive platform to showcase their innovative data sensors to potential customers and audiences at trade shows. The goal was to offer a dynamic 2 to 3-minute experience that highlights the various applications of their sensors in real-world scenarios.

User Experience Design

Our design approach was centered around creating a user-friendly interface with a clean aesthetic, aligning closely with Disruptive Technologies’ brand identity. We opted for a low-poly environment to ensure optimal performance across different devices while maintaining visual appeal. The incorporation of the client’s brand colors throughout the design further reinforced brand recognition and consistency.

The user experience was carefully crafted to guide users through a captivating journey of discovery within a virtual cityscape. Upon entering the application, users are presented with the task of navigating the city to discover pulsating sensor icons scattered throughout the environment. Each icon represents a specific sensor application, including energy efficiency & sustainability, workplace health & wellbeing, desk occupancy, smart cleaning, and feedback & service.

As users interact with each sensor icon, they are presented with immersive case examples showcasing real-world scenarios where Disruptive Technologies’ sensors are deployed. These case examples are strategically placed within different buildings across the cityscape, adding depth and context to the user experience. Additionally, each case example features a call-to-action button that redirects users to the main Disruptive Technologies website, where they can access more detailed information about the showcased application.

Development

To achieve this objective, we utilized PlayCanvas, a powerful platform for creating interactive 3D experiences that can be seamlessly deployed across both PC and mobile devices. PlayCanvas enabled us to develop a visually appealing and responsive application that could run smoothly on various web mobile and desktop browsers.

For the team and I, it was the first time using PlayCanvas, introducing both challenges and a rewarding learning curve. The transition to a new tool presented hurdles in terms of understanding its intricacies, workflows, and optimizing performance for various platforms. However, the challenges were met with enthusiasm and a spirit of exploration. Collaborating closely with PlayCanvas’ features, we uncovered innovative ways to bring our vision to life. The platform’s capabilities became apparent as we delved into its functionalities, and overcoming the learning curve became a gratifying journey for me. This experience not only resulted in a captivating 3D showcase for Disruptive Technologies but also equipped our team with valuable skills and insights into leveraging PlayCanvas for future WebGL projects in crafting immersive digital experiences.

Outcome

The immersive 3D experience successfully met the objectives set by Disruptive Technologies. The interactive nature of the showcase captivated users, effectively communicating the versatility and real-world applications of their data sensors. This project not only enhanced Disruptive Technologies’ presence at trade shows but also served as a dynamic and engaging addition to their online portfolio.

Through collaboration and innovative design and development, we were able to deliver a standout product showcase experience that effectively highlights Disruptive Technologies’ cutting-edge solutions. By leveraging the power of 3D technology and interactive storytelling, we have provided a compelling platform for engaging potential customers and driving interest and awareness in the client’s products.
